About Comment On
What's this site for?
Have you ever read an article, watched a video, or saw a post and thought "I wish I could leave a comment on this, but I can't". This "can't" could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe the website doesn't support comments on the content, such as web articles. More often you might find yourself trying to comment on a video or social media post, only to find that the comments have been disabled due to controversy. Comment-On aims to help solve the problem of unavailable comments by providing a separate, third-party host for comments on external websites.
"But," you say, "isn't this just a Reddit clone?"
The difference between Reddit or another forum and Comment-on is that a piece of media can only exist on Comment-On in one single instance and content always originates from another source. The goal is to provide a single-source of truth for comments on a specific article, user, or video on a given website. The strenth of a platform like Reddit comes from the communities it has. The same content can exist in multiple places on Reddit, and can therefore be interpreted differently by different groups of people. Comments on Reddit also have to originate from a post made by a Reddit user. Instead, Comment-On competes with the comment sections on the sites themselves which host the content that is being commented on.
Why'd you make it?
Because I needed a software project on my resume that wasn't totally useless. Please hire me or donate because I have 4 children cats at home to feed.
Also because of the Clinton Kane drama on TikTok. I see a clear need for external comment sections on TikTok. It's too easy for creators to protect their fragile egos by hiding the opinions of other people. What's even better about Comment-On than any other comment section is that it allows you to comment on any type of 'thing' you can uniquely reference on a website. This is the first place (which I know of) that allows for commenting on profiles themselves. Now you can leave your hate comments right on someone's account, rather than on their videos.
Have fun!
What's with the Passkeys?
- • The best way to store passwords is to not store passwords.
- • Passkeys are far more secure than passwords, and easier to implement than 2-factor.
- • No emails and usernames means you get to keep your privacy.
It's a win, win, win as far as I can tell. Just be careful not to lose your passkeys. Protecting your privacy by not collecting your email or phone number means I don't have a way to help restore your account without your secret phrase. Thankfully passkeys are always automatically stored in your device and typically synced to your cloud provider. It's as safe as your own device is.
